3. Plastic Intake Failure
These engines use a plastic intake manifold and this was one of the first takes by Ford to build such a design.
Old-school Ford engines were using cast intake manifolds. But modern times require modern solutions. In order to reduce expenses and the weight of the engine, manufacturers started to offer plastic intake manifolds.
And since this was one of the first takes, these manifolds did not perform particularly well. They tend to crack and allow leaks to develop.
These leaks are not your ordinary coolant leaks but air leaks. There are leaks of air coming out from the manifold and this will completely mess up the air-to-fuel ratio.

The tensioner has the role of keeping the right tension on the chain. And when this component fails, you will experience a timing chain rattle.
This is a very important symptom because this rattle must be addressed on time before the chain jumps and beds a couple of valves. In the worst case, the whole engine can lock up and you will have to refinish the cylinder heads. Which can be very expensive to do.

6. Cam Phaser Failure
Another common cause for rattling noises appearing on these engines is the cam phasers. So, what are cam phasers?
Cam phasers are two big sprockets for the variable valve timing, or VCT as it is called on this engine.
These sprockets tend to fail often on these Ford engines. Whenever they fail, they also tend to rattle, especially at a cold start.
This is the case because these phasers are bone dry whenever the engine starts. Even after the engine warms up they stop rattling.
